Boy was I wrong.
Every single book we've read so far has been on the EXACT same topic, with the EXACT same views.
Now, this course is titled "Intro to Philosophy". I was expecting an introduction to the fathers of philosophy; Plato, Aristotle, etc. Nope. Not a one. All we're reading about is how the authors (of whom I've never heard of) define God and how they have come to the conclusion He really exists. We don't have classroom discussions on the topics, nor do we speak of anything else, save our holy creator.
Maybe I was misled in thinking this was going to be a class that made me think and maybe I should've considered that the course material might be biased, based on the views of my community. But honestly, I'm quite disappointed. It's a college class for goodness sakes. It should've been titled "Intro to Theological Philosophy".
I'll say right out, I'm an atheist. But I'm also very open to listening to other people's beliefs and will willingly listen to someone's arguments on why they think God exists. I don't think someone is stupid for believing in god(s). I'm very curious about religion and attend a bible study, despite my beliefs. But that does not make me ok with having an outright biased college class that offers no alternative to the one "right" belief. *sigh*
My friend mentioned this to my teacher, who didn't come back with much of a response. But, on a lighter note, an interesting idea sprang from him mentioning it.
If the universe wasn't created be God, how was it created? Disregarding the Big Bang Theory approach for reasons of boredom and random high school mind wanderings, we came up with something rather interesting.
We were reading "Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion" by David Hume and were at the part where he brings up that maybe the universe wasn't created, it came about like any animal or plant would. Which led us to thinking "...aren't animals born? Doesn't that almost always involve another animal? Plants are pollinated and the seeds germinate, but doesn't that too require another plant?" That led us along the devious mental paths of the average teenager to "If universes are created like plants and animals, how do they procreate?" Which of course lead to "Do universes...like...screw?"
THAT would be weird.
And I have not yet found a Rule 34 on the subject of universes. =/
